Taipei, Taiwan- March 20, 2014: Youngsters smoked at the window of Legislative Yuan. Thousands of people crowded around Legislative Yuan while hundreds had broken into the building to occupy the legislative chamber since Mar. 18. Demonstrators planned to occupy until Friday’s session, to protest against Cross Strait Service Trade Agreement, a trade pact with China which was doubted unfavorable to Taiwan’s future yet being pushed to pass hastily by the ruling party on Mar. 17 barely with examination, public discussion and procedure transparency. The hasty pass was viewed as a great harm to Taiwan’s democracy. Standoff between the police and occupier inside the legislative chamber hasn’t been resolved. However, there had been arrests and injuries. While some viewed the occupation of Legislative Yuan as a violent action initiated by students, many viewed it as an important social movement which happened for the first time in history.
