The process of construction is as follows,—the method beingsimilar when applied to larger dentures of this class: The rootof the central is first prepared and capped the same as for a collarcrown. The cap is best formed of iridio-platinum plate, Xo. 35U. S. standard gauge (A, Fig. 409). A substantial piece of goldand platinum wire, from No. 16 to No. 18 U. S. standard gauge(the number being regulated by the size of the root), is slit aboutone-eighth of an inch so as to form a spring-post or pivot. Thisis easily done by placing the wire in a vise and steadily cuttingit downward through the center with a saw-edged strip of verythin steel (Fig. 410). This takes only a few minutes, and ispreferable to partially joining two pieces of half-round wire. Fig. 409. Fig. The wire is then tapped together at the slit, burnished smooth androunded just at the end (B, Fig. 409). The tube for this pivot isformed by once encircling the pivot with a piece of iridio-plati-num plate, No. 32 U. S. standard gauge, the edge of which isbeveled and cut to meet the plate even and close (C). The pivotis then withdrawn, and the seam is touched along its length withthe smallest possible quantity of borax. The proper manner touse borax in fine work is to grind it, mixed with water, on a slabto a cream-like consistence, and apply on the point of a camels-hair brush. A very small piece of pure gold is placed in theseam, and the tube is held in the fiame of an alcohol a suflicient degree of heat is reached, the gold will flowalong the seam and form a joint without obstructing the insidepassage for the pivot. The pivot is then inserted, and the tube 208 ARTIFICIAL CROWN- AND BRIDGE-WORK. trimmed (D) and gauged in a gauge-plate. With a drill justthe size of the tube
