Radis, Rave Petite et tongue, Fr. Radishes thrive best ifi a light, rich, mellow soil, and to bring out their mild qualities they must make a quick and tender growth ; heavy or clayey soils not only delay their growth, but produce a much inferior crop in appearance and flavor. Sow for very early use in hot-beds during the winter and eariy spring, or later on in sheltered borders, in well-manured, deeply dug, and finely raked soil; if not well stimulated into a rapid growth, they become fibrous and tough; sow in drills 10 inches apart, and thin to 2 inches in the rows. Sow at intervals of two or three weeks until September for a succession. As soon as the first leaves appear sprinkle with soot, wood-ashes, or air-slacked lime, or slug shot, to save them from the little black Cabbage and Turnip fly. The winter varieties should be sown in July and August; like the Turnip, they make the best growth in autumn, and must be taken up before severe frost, and stored away in a cool cellar in sand, or a pit, where they will keep tender and crisp all winter; before using put in cold water, which adds to their freshness.
