Major Anderson, faithful to the trust reposed in him by thegovernment, soon decided that Fort Moultrie could not be heldagainst a vigorous assault, and he moved his garrison secretly toSumter, a fortress across the harbor. This fort could not beapproached by land, and, consequently, from this fact, was deemedmore secure against any opposing force. The undertaking was adangerous one. The harbor was full of guard boats, vigilant andwatchful, and only their supposition that the little rowboats con-taining Major Anderson and his men were laborers going to theother fort to work on it, prevented their detection and OFF FOR THE WAR. Moultries guns had been trained to protect this transfer incase the Majors intention was discovered, and the fort, whosedefense rendered the gallant Anderson immortal, was occupied byhis troops at only twenty minutes notice! We think that was thequickest moving time on record. A siege gun which was turned upon Fort Sumter is shown onpage 20. Its carriage is broken, and it was thus rendered uselessby the Confederates, when they abandoned the fort in 1864. FIRST GUN FIRED. 19 France and England would not acknowledge the South as anindependent nation, but the Confederate government did allpossible to bring this about by sending Messrs. James M. Mason of Virginia and John Slidell of Louisianaas ministers to London and Paris, withthe hope that their claims would berecognized.
