Victorian Tunnel-Digging Machine
This machine was used, it seems, to dig railway tunnels. The engraving dates from 1878, a French newspaper, which says that the digging was powered by compressed air (although it might also be steam, judging by the funnel). The illustration was of the Saint-Gotthard tunnel, and an early use of a mechanical tunnel boring machine.
