This viper especially fre-quents dry, rocky, and aridhillsides, which are exposedto the sun. Like the adder,it hibernates in tree-trunksand old walls. It lays from6 to 15 eggs, from whichthe living young immediatelyissue, provided with feeds upon small rodents,worms, insects, and youngbirds. Raptorial birds, storks, and hedgehogs pursue (Natural size.) ^^ and deVOUr it in large (Prom the Forest of Fontaineblean.) numbers.
