The Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railway is based in Durango, Colorado, USA and is now a major tourist attraction in the region. The original railroad arrived in Durango on 5th August 1881 as part of the Denver and Rio Grande Railway (founded in 1879) In the same year work started to extend the railroad to Silverton. By July 1882 the tracks to were complete, hauling both freight and carrying passengers. The main purpose of the line was to haul gold and silver ore from the San Juan Mountains.
