George Villiers, 1st Duke of Buckingham (1592-1628), said to be "the most handsomest-bodied man in all of England", a favourite of both King James I of England and VI of Scotland and of his son, King Charles I. Engraving created in the 1700s after a portrait painted by Cornelius Johnson (1593-1661).

George Villiers, 1st Duke of Buckingham (1592-1628), a favourite of both King James I of England and VI of Scotland and of his son, King Charles I. Original antique copperplate engraving by an unknown engraver, after a portrait painted by Cornelius Johnson (1593-1661). This engraving was first used in a verse history of the English Civil Wars by Edward Ward (1667 - 1731), 'History of the Grand Rebellion’ published in 1713. The engraving was then re-used, with plate number added, in later editions of the 'History of the Rebellion and Civil Wars in England' by Edward Hyde, Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs to King Charles I, who was later raised to the peerage as 1st Earl of Clarendon. George Villiers, said to be 'the most handsomest-bodied man in all of England', was believed by courtiers to be the lover of King James. He benefited from the King's patronage, advancing up the peerage until he was created Duke of Buckingham in 1623, and thus the highest-ranking subject in the country. However, his various political and military projects mostly ended in disaster and Parliament twice tried but failed to impeach him. He was finally stabbed to death at an inn in Portsmouth. Cornelius Johnson or Cornelis Janssens van Ceulen was a Flemish painter active in England in the first part of the 1600s.
