King's College DNA researchers. Social event (inter-departmental cricket match) at King's College London (KCL). At far left is British physicist and biophysicist John Turton Randall (1905-1984), with his wife Doris. Second from right is British physicist and molecular biologist Maurice Wilkins (1916-2004). Randall and Wilkins were respectively the leader and deputy leader of the project at KCL that used X-ray diffraction to study the structure of DNA in the 1950s. The results supported the theories of Crick and Watson. For his work, Wilkins shared the 1962 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with Crick and Watson. Randall was knighted in 1962.
