GREEK MYTHOLOGY - RHEA The Mother of the Gods - an ancient Earth-goddess (literally, the Earth itself), normally drawn in a chariot by four lions (here by two) and crowned with a turret-like crown (as a goddess-founder of cities), and carrying the sacred tympanum. The figure to the right is one of the corybantes, or priests - the sickle perhaps an indication that he has castrated himself. Woodcut from a 16th century edition of Natalis Comitis, Mythologiae.
