Another sacred relic of colonial times isChrist Church, on Second street, north ofMarket. It was begun in 1727 and finished,by the raising of the steeple, in 1754. Itschime of bells is among the oldest on this sideof the Atlantic. On the tenor is inscribed,Christ Church, Philadelphia. ThomasLester and Thomas Peck, of London, madeus all. When the British troops tookPhiladelphia, these bells, like others in thecity, were removed to prevent them fallinginto the hands of the enemy and being castinto cannon. They returned with the pa-triots, and have remained to peal forth theirmusic ever since. In their time they havesummoned to worship some of the greatestmen our country has produced.
