James Tennant (1808-1881), British mineralogist. Tennant was born in Nottinghamshire, and was apprenticed to John Mawe, a dealer in minerals in London. Mawe died in 1829, and Tennant went into partnership with his widow, eventually buying the business from her. Tennant spent much of his spare time studying, and was eventually appointed to the chair of geological mineralogy at KingÕs College London. When the famous Koh-i-Noor diamond was recut in 1840, Tennant supervised the work and was appointed mineralogist to Queen Victoria. He gave generously to many schemes for technical education, and served as president of the Geological Society in 1862-3.
