View NNW over the stone rampart of Pen y Gaer Iron Age hillfort, Conwy, Wales, UK, showing the chevaux de frise & linear earthwork defences outside the W entrance. The small, pointed upright stones are meant to disrupt enemy charges, especially those using horses & chariots. Up to three ramparts of stone, earthen banks & ditches enclose an area of two hectares. There are hut platforms inside the fort & patches of chevaux de frise outside the fort on the S & W. Rear L: pylons march through the pass of Bwlch y Ddeufaen also used by a prehistoric route & the Roman road from Segontium (Caernarfon) to Canovium (Caerhun) in the Conwy Valley. Rear centre R: the ridge of Tal y Fan.
