Blue sky view, looking west, isolated sea ice blocks on wet beach sand expanse, east of St Annes, Lancashire, UK

The winter of 2010-2011 included the coldest December since Met Office Records began in 1910. The mean December 2010 temperature was minus 1 degree Celsius. In some places the temperature was down to minus 10 degrees Cleslius (14 F). Late November to Boxing Day 2010 included two spells of severe winter weather in the UK with very low temperatures and significant snowfall. The beach between Fairhaven and St Annes, on Lancashire's Fylde Coast, in December 2010 displayed large areas of sea ice, several centimetres thick. Blue sky view, looking west towards an expanse of saltmarsh and the coastline at Southport, of isolated sea ice blocks on wet beach sand, east of St Annes. The blocks are the remains of a more extensive expanse of sea ice a few days earlier.
