From this time for several monthsthe volunteer companies took turns at Fort Pulaski. The Guards werethere several times. While these events were in progress, recruits rapidly poured in andthe Guards hastened to effect the permanent battalion organization. Theplan was to form two companies, A and B, by assigning members tothem; and complete the organization by formal elections for officers, andto elect Captain Screven major of the battalion.
