We know that hunting is a sport that buildscharacter, makes strong muscles, red blood, andinstills in us a love of nature. But with his firstgun the boy begins the transformation that ends inmanhood. For the first time his parents show con-fidence in him, and knowingly allow him the use ofa mans weapon. Now, to me, one of the most powerful reasonsfor training boys in the use of firearms at an earlyage, is, that most of the accidental slaughter com-mitted with firearms is due to men who have notbeen given an opportunity to use guns in their am not going to argue, here, on the didnt knowit was loaded man. He, as a rule, only hurtshimself; and a little early training will soon instillinto boys a fear of every gun. To me, the greatestcrime committed with firearms is the shooting of afellow human being in mistake for game. Any manwho has ever committedthis fault, no matter what ^,M#A. the result may have been, should be forbidden bythe laws of the country to ever shoulder a gun crime is responsible to two things—senselessexcitement, and criminal thoughtlessness or careless-ness, and a man liable to either of these faults, is amenace in the bush, or anywhere. Let your bearing towards your gun be one ofconstant watchfulness. Let your enjoyment of hunt-ing lie in the pleasure of studying the habits of wildanimals, and in doing well a mans part in thedangers and hardships of the wilderness hunt. Letyour desire be to kill what game you do, as a man, rather than to kill a lot, as a butcher. In this wayyou will grow younger as you grow old ; and thefreshness of the fields, the dignity of the mountains, and the laughter of the cle^ar streams, will enter intoand be a part of you.
