HPV protein E7, CR3 domain, molecular model. This model shows a region of the protein E7, produced by the human papillomavirus (HPV). E7 binds to proteins produced by the cell to encourage normal cell cycles and prevent the formation of tumours. When E7 binds, the tumour-suppressing action is blocked, and the development of malignant tumours becomes more likely. HPV infection can lead to cervical cancer in women. In this model, the solid colours represent the secondary structure of the protein (spiral ribbons are alpha helices; arrows are beta sheets), and the faded tubular structure behind represents the individual atoms and bonds.
