On Dec. 9, 1761, the Colonial gov-ernors were forbidden to issue judicial commissions, except at the pleasureof the King. This was considered an attempt to make judges subserv-ient to the will of the King. Stamp Act. The famous Stamp Act was signed by the King, March22, 1765. It required all legal documents to be written on stampedpaper, to be bought only of the tax collectors—the stamps cost from 3cents to £6—that every newspaper and pamphlet must bear a stampcosting one-half penny to four pence, and that each advertisement shouldpay two shillings duty. Stamp Act Repealed. In 1766, the Stamp Act was repealed, butParliament claimed the right to exercise unlimited power over the Colon-ies.
