There he had the men lie do\vn wherethey were largely screened from view. They were to remainin that position until he gave the word. The company on theskirmish line was to resist as long as possible, then quietlyfall into its place in the regiment. At the command thewhole line was to rise up, fire a careful, deliberate volley intothe ranks of the advancing enemy, then charge them with thebayonet. These preliminaries had barely been arranged when therebel line swept forward.
