But if this is the most conspicuous of the Renais-sance additions to the old basilica, more Interestingand important is the chapel of James, that mostvirtuous and admirable young cardinal of Portugal,who died while visiting Florence In 1459. Thetomb is the masterpiece of Antonio Rossellino, andthe four tondi set In checkered green, white, andblack-tiled background are by Luca della recumbent figure of the cardinal and his pat-terned robes, and the figures of the two cherubs be-low his feet and head, are among the finest pro-ductions of the decorative school of stone-cuttersculptors. The beautiful black and white marble fagade ofthe church was done in 1491, and bears an interest-ing old mosaic in gold, restored in the fourteenth,and again in the fifteenth century. The campanile,begun in 1524 to take the place of an earlier smallone ruined in 1499, was still in process of construc-tion in 1530, when the siege of Florence took Miniato was the center of the defense of thecity, and all its old buildings, together with the for-tifications rapidly constructed under Michelangelosdirection, constituted a sort of fortress, which wasthe chief object of attack by Oranges army.
