For several centuries of Moorish rule during the medieval era, the great city of Granada in Al- Andalus was a relative haven of peaceful coexistence between the great monotheist religions of Islam, Judaism and Christianity. The Catholic Reconquista of 1492 changed all that, bringing rapid intolerance, ethnic cleansing, mass deportations and - of course - the gruesome Spanish Inquisition. Granada's beautiful Jewish Quarter never recovered. All that remains is a sense of loss, a single deserted synagogue, and some atmospheric remnants like this beautiful door leading to a courtyard and sistant promise of a garden.
