Flood refugees, Mississippi, USA. Refugee camp run by the American Red Cross after flooding from the Mississippi River at Greenville, Mississippi, USA. This is sometime between 1920 and 1932. Here, the refugees are lining up to be vaccinated against disease. The Mississippi, one of the longest rivers in the USA, flows over 3700 kilometres north to south across the USA. It has the third largest drainage basin in the world, and heavy rainfall can cause massive flooding further downstream. Some of the worse floods in the USA have occurred on the Mississippi River, including the Great Mississippi Flood of 1927, when refugees at Greenville were stranded for days without food or water.
