This medieval crossbow, known as cranequin, has a rack and pinion, which allowed it to be used by a person riding a horse.

This 1882 illustration shows a crossbow from the medieval period, around 1400. This crossbow is of the type known as cranequin, as it has a rack and pinion, which does allow it to be used by a person who is at the same time riding a horse. Light crossbows can be drawn by hand, but this heavier type requires a mechanical device to help the user. Crossbows have a horizontal bow-like assembly that is mounted on a stock.
