It is advisable to bring the tube to thedesired degree of softness each time before it is used, and only to heat theextreme end of the palladium tube. The Baiter Air-Valve Regulator.—Another form of regulator is the. Illlii llllHI 1 Fio. 62.—Uauer air-valve. (Favre.) air-valve invented by Mr. Heinz Bauer. This consists of a dehcatelyconstructed valve, closed by a column of mercury, and fitted with an airfilter. By means of a small hand pump and an india-rubber tube, thecolumn of mercury is so as to open a very small aperture, throughwhich a minute quantity of air is thus allowed to pass. The mercury immediately, and the opening is again sealed, the vacuum of thetube having meanwhile been lowered by the admission of the air. If desired, METHOD OF USING GUNDELACH REGULATOR 79 the Bauer valve may be worked with a long rubber tube, thus allowing ofregulation taking place from a distance, and while the tube is actuallyrunning. Gundelach Regulator.—Another very good regeneration apparatus maybe described. This arrangement consists of a little condenser which is made in theform of a cylindrical glass tube covered with an imperfect conductor ofelectricity. By special treatment
