As a rule,the affection is progressive in character, both locally and gen-erally. The range of motion in the affected joint becomes moreand more restricted, the limb becomes flexed, and, finally, thereis practical anchylosis, usually due to adhesions and contractionswithin and without the joint. In those cases in which thecartilage is in part destroyed by the growth of granulationtissue from the periphery there may be actual bony union. Inmany instances the spine becomes rigid, including the occi-pitoaxoid articulations, and practically every joint of the bodymay be finally involved, so that the patient is bedridden andhelpless. The disease is more serious and more rapidly progressive inthe young than in older subjects. There are
