There are a number of manufacturing concerns over the county as follows:Five lime kilns, hardwood factories, ten large flouring mills, ten smaller rollermills, most of which are run by water power. There are eight banks in the county,and six high schools. Population, census of 1910, 20,942. Woodstock, the county seat, is located near the center of the county on theManassas branch of the Southern railway, and has a population of 1,400. Itsstreets are in good condition, paved with macadam, have brick sidewalks, and. 211 lighted with electricity. A complete system of water works is in operation anda number of fine buildings have been erected, and others are under principal industries are flour mills, broom and furniture factories, planingmill, lime kiln, fruit evaporator and sawmills. It has also good public schools,numerous churches, a newspaper, several banks and fraternal orders. Other flourishing towns of the county are Edinburg, Mt. Jackson, New Market,and Strasburg. At the latter place are located factories for the manufactureof porcelain, pottery, etc., several largo lime plants, producing a very superiorquality of lime, and a large hardwood factory. SMYTH COUNTY. This county was formed in 1831 from Washington and Wythe and is locatedin Southwestern Virginia, 240 miles from Richmond.
