SANTA CRUZ ISLAND, GALAPAGOS, ECUADOR - MARCH 2007: Trash lines a beach closed to tourists on Santa Cruz Island. Ironically, the few areas open to tourists in the Galapagos are often cleaner and more well maintained than those that are off limits to visitation. Coastal areas in the Galapagos not open to tourists are frequently lined with trash, apparently dumped by boats. Since these areas get almost no visitors, very few people see the pollution, and there is no public outcry. This is an ironic and unintended consequence of the heavy regulations placed on tourists.
