He first became gen-erally known in 1881 as a humorous writer for theDenver Tribtme; Tind later for his Sharps andFlats in the Daily Neivs, now the Record, of Chi-cago. In the Sharps and Flats column firstappeared the dialect poems and charming chil-drens verses Avhich have endeared him to thehearts of American and European readers ; chiefamong them being his Little Boy Blue; hitry-Mintry ; Ganderfeathcrs Gift ; and Wynken, Blyn-ken^ and Nod. Several of these books werewritten in collaboration with his brother; andsome were at first privately printed, and were notg-iven to the general public until a year or twolater than the dates here affixed. The Love Affairs of a Bibliomaniac was left unfinished, andwas published after the authors death. Eugene Field was widely known among liter-ary people, and was universally beloved. He wasabove all things a lover of books; his library, col-lected with care, was large, and contained manyrare volumes, bought at any price, whether hecould afford it or not.
