Baron Clyde

Colin Campbell, First Baron Clyde was born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1792. He embarked on a career in the army from a humble, working class background but rose in the ranks through his gallantry and professionalism as a soldier and because of the increasing demands placed upon the military by the continuing expansion of the British Empire. He first served in India during the Second Sikh War and was knighted in 1847. He returned to take command of the British Army in India at the outbreak of the uprising of 1857 (Indian Mutiny, Indian Rebellion) and led the forces for the relief of Cawnpore (Kanpur) and Lucknow and gained a reputation as a great military tactician. There is a statue of Baron Clyde in George Square, Glasgow.
