The bridge was originally known as Most SNP (Bridge of the Slovak National Uprising) and it officially reverted to this name in 2012. However, it is often referred to as the ‘UFO Bridge’ because of the flying saucer-shaped structure housing a restaurant and viewing platform on top of its m-high (278 ft) pylon. Bratislava, still in the former Czechoslovakia in 1972, is now the capital of the independent Slovak Republic or Slovakia.
