Early in the spring of 1853, FatherMesplie showed me confidentially a letter to him fromFather Pandosy, making known a gigantic combinationof all the tribes on the frontier. I took immediate stepsto report to the Government these schemes of the In-dians. Had the warning been heeded the Indian war of1855 might have been OLD CATHEDRAL, AND FATHER FJERENS, ITS BUILDER CHAPTER XXI. LAST YEARS OF ARCHBISHOP BLANCHET. 1. Father Fierens Becomes Pastor of Portland. The Archbishop had taken up his residence inPortland in August, 1862. The following yearFather J. T. Fierens, who had been Pastor ofJacksonville, was appointed to the -pro-Cathe-dral, a charge which he held continuously forthirty years, until his death in 1893. In 1878,under the direction of Father Fierens, the oldchurch structure was taken down and on theFeast of the Assumption of the same year thecorner stone of a Gothic Cathedral was a quarter of a century the zealous andenergetic pastor was one of the foremost menin public view in Portland. 2. Erection of the Vicariate of Idaho. In 1868, Archbishop Blanchet was relievedof the care of the eastern portion of his dio-cese by the erection on March 3rd of that yearof the Vicariate Apostolic of Idaho.
