SOILS AND FERTILIZEES. It iis generally supposed that turnips or rutabagas will do well on anysoil and with scarcely any fertilising. This is a mistake. Turnips orrutabagas should be planted in the South on light, loamy, well manuredland. Cottonseed meal broadcasted is an excellent fertilizer for turnips,and so is well rotted .stable manure. If other manures are used, use 600pounds per acre, especially manures that contain nitrogen, actual potash andavailable phosphoric acid. The intention of using manures is to stimulate quick growth, as novegetable is palatable or salable if grown slowly, and is tough in conse-quence. PLANTING.
