Naval Memorial Gibraltar to the total loss of life of US Coast Guard Tampa torpedoed on escort duties USCG Seneca both 'lost' in September 1918.
Coast Guard Cutter Tampa was transferred to naval control when the USA entered World War 1 and served in the European war zone from late 1917 escorting convoys between Gibraltar and Britain. She was torpedoed and sunk by German submarine UB-91 on 26 September 1918 while in the Bristol Channel. All on board were lost. The loss is memorialised here at Gibraltar and in the Chapel at the ABMC cemetery Brookwood. USCGC Seneca was lost when attempting to salvage the British steamer Wellington torpedoed in the Bay of Biscay on the 17th September 1918. The merchantman sank in 'a raging storm' despite the efforts of the 20 Seneca volunteers who perished in the freezing waters of the Bay.
