Curved walkway of Gateshead Millennium Bridge over the River Tyne, Gateshead, Tyneside, Tyne and Wear, England, UK.
Opened 17 September 2001, it is the world's first tilting bridge, opening like a giant eyelid to form an arch. Total span is 413 feet (126 metres) and height is 164 feet (50 metres). The 850 tonne structure tilts on pivots on each side of the river powered by 8 electric motors totalling 440 kilowatts or 589 horse power. An opening or closing takes four minutes and the energy efficient design results in it only costing £3. 60 each time it opens. It is purpose built for pedestrians and cyclists and connects two cross country riverside cycleways, which are part of a national network. Cost £22 million.
