Montana ANG 120th Fighter Interceptor Group T-33A on the ANG ramp at Great Falls IAP on a typical sunny day. Clean lines of T-33 stand out. Tip tanks were a necessity due to the reduction in fuselage tank capacity from the P-80 to fit the rear cockpit. Lockheed self funded T-33 development as P-90 fatal accident rate was excessive. Pilots were having difficulty landing the T-33 as it did not slow down rapidly like the propeller powered fighters they were used to. Also engine response on a balked landing once in idle was excessively slow. Note speed brakes and flaps beneath fuselage and wings.
