The Governors Mansion is located on the highestpoint on the bluff, and has a charming view of the whole city,harbor and ocean. This beautiful place was built severalyears ago, when Durban had a Governor. The acres sur-rounding it were planted in rare trees, shrubbery and flowers,interspersed with walks and drives. Since the formation ofthe Union of the South African States one governor is ap- 123 OUR HOLIDAY IX AFRICA. DURBAN pointed for all the Union, and he resides at the capital, Pre-toria. Nevertheless, Durban in its desire to make the cityattractive, keeps this mansion and grounds in fine condition,simply as a show place. There is a race course in the centralpart of the city, given to the public at an early day withthe proviso that it can be used only for public sports, andinside the track is an eighteen-hole golf course. The city hasgrown up around this race course, but it must be retained forsports only. The largest vessels, drawing thirty-three feet of water,come up alongside the loading docks, and a large dry dock ismaintained here. The coal mines, which are about two hun-dred miles inland, have probably done as much as any otherone thing to make this a great shipping point. It is a goodquality of coal and delivered to the ships at four dollars perton. This causes all the big steamers from England to comehere for coal, and makes this really the starting point of th
