Spherical geometry. Computer graphic of a spheri- cal harmonic function. Spherical harmonics are mainly used to describe hybrid electron orbital shapes in molecules. The different parts of this shape have been colour-coded to represent their distance from the centre. A spherical harmonic function makes use of a spherical coordinate system. Spherical coordinates describe the position of any point in three-dimensional space by using a vertical angle, a horizontal angle and the direct-line distance from a reference point.
