First (red) & second degree burns on the body & leg of a young child. The degree of a burn refers to the debth of damage done to the skin. First degree affects only the outer layer (epidermis) of the skin. Second degree involves damage to both the epidermis & the dermis, the underlying layer consisting of connective tissue, blood, lymph, sensory nerve endings, sweat glands & ducts, hair follicles & sebaceous glands. Third degree burns affect the epidermis, dermis & damage tissue lying beneath the skin.
