This aerial photograph shows some of the more than 4,400 military planes mothballed in Tucson, Arizona, at the Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, home to the largest aircraft storage and preservation facility in the world. The boneyard was established after World War II and holds generations of aircraft once used by the Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, NASA and other government agencies. The desert site was chosen because of the area's low humidity, meager rainfall, and high altitude that allows the aircraft to be naturally preserved for cannibalization or possible reuse later.
