The pterygoideus externusarises from the outer side ofthe pterygoid process of thesphenoid bone ; from the tube-rosity of the superior maxillarybone ; and from the root of thetemporal process of the sphe-noid bone. From these originsit passes outwards, and a littlebackwards, to be inserted intothe cervix of the inferior max-illary bone and capsular liga-ment of the joint. Action, —to pull the lower jaw to theopposite side ; and when bothmuscles act, to bring it forwards, so as to make the under fore teethproject beyond those of the upper jaw. The pterygoideus internus arises from the fossa pterygoidea of thesphenoid bone, passes downwards and outwards, to be inserted into theinner side of the angle of the inferior maxillary bone. Action, — to raisethe jaw, and draw it obliquely towards the opposite ]22 THE DISSECTORS GUIDE. The circumflexus palati arises from the spinous process of the sphe-noidDone, from the osseous and cartilaginous parts of the Eustachianfube and from the root of the internal pterygoid process. It runs alongthe ptervgoideus internus, passes over the hook of the internal plate ofhe pterygoid process, and playing on it by a round tendon as on a pul-ev U spreads out into a broad membrane, to be inserted into the ve urnpalati, and semilunar edge of the os palati, extending as far as tie suturewhich joins the two bones. Generally, some of its posterior fibres jointhe constrictor pharyngis superior and palato-pharyngeus. Action, — todepress and stretch the velum. The levator palati arms from the point of the pars petrosa of the tem-poral bone, and also from the membranous portion of the Eustachiantub
