The Chapel of St John's College was constructed between 1866 and 1869 to a design by Sir George Gilbert Scott to replace the smaller, mediaeval chapel which dated back to the 13th century. The site was originally occupied by the Hospital of St John the Evangelist, probably founded around 1200, but by the early 16th century the hospital was dilapidated and suffering from a lack of funds. St John's College is a constituent college of the University of Cambridge.
