Salieri, the old rival of Mozart, was the first torecognize Schuberts genius. He can do everything,he exclaimed, he is a genius. He composes songs,masses, operas, quartets — whatever you can thinkof. In 1822 Schubert met both Beethoven andWeber. Beethoven he adored. The Fifth Symphony, known as the Symphonywithout trumpets and drums, is scored for two vio-lins, viola, violoncello, double-bass, flute, two oboes,two bassoons and two horns. It is dated 1816. Upto this point Schuberts Symphonies show the influ-ence of Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven. Now camethe true Schubert style with the Sixth, the C-majorSymphony, which is regarded as Schuberts master-piece. It is scored for two violins, viola, violoncelloand double-bass; two flutes, two oboes, two clari-nets, two bassoons, two horns, two trumpets, anddrums.
