The settlement of Tourlida, full of stilt houses, on the edge of the lagoon of Messolonghi, Central Greece

This is Tourlida a small settlement 5 km to the south of the "Sacred" town, right where the lagoon meets the sea. It is quite a swampy area (I guess if you remove that Greek Orthodox church, it could look sort of like the Mississippi Delta) with some wooden stilt houses that stand above water. It has a nice sandy beach and some excellent fish taverns. It has become somekind of summer resort for the people of was an island until 1885, when a road connected the village with the town of Messolonghi. The Lagoon of Messolonghi is an important wetland protected by the Ramsar convention and Natura 2000. This kind of "floating" houses are used by the fishermen of the lagoon.
