His father,Ben Harrison, was a direct descendant of thefamous Col. Harrison, officer in the army of OliverCromwell of England. He was speaker of the Vir-ginia house of burgesses and afterward a zealousmember of the Continental congress; and the sameBen Harrison, June 10, 1776, as chairman of thecommittee of the whole in congress, reported to thatbody the resolution declaring the Independence ofthe British colonies. William Henry Harrison wasa studious lad; there were books at Berkely and hemade good use of them. There is no record of theprecise dates of his entry into or his graduation fromHampden-Sidney College, but after leaving it heturned his attention to the study of medicine.
