Snowdon Mountain railway crossing the Afon Arddu river just above Llanberis station. The coal-fired steam locomotive No 4 is called Eryri, was built in 1923 and now out of service. It is pictured pushing one of the enclosed carriages (introduced after 1986) to the summit. Snowdon Mountain Railway, Narrow gauge, rack and pinion railway running from Llanberis Station SH 582597 to Snowdon Summit Station SH 609543. Opened 6 April 1896, immediately closed as an accident on first day forced closure of line for a year. Re-opened 1897. Upper terminus is 66ft below the summit (3560ft OD minus 66ft) & 3140 ft above the Llanberis station. Journey lasts 1 hour each way. Each train comprises 1 loco & 1 carriage. Single track (with passing places) covers kilometers, laid to gauge of 800mm with double bladed rack to design patented by Dr Abt in 1882.
