The lantern room of the historic St Augustine Lighthouse looks beautiful as the fresnel lens is back-lit by the descending sun.

This image is of the lantern room of the historic Lighthouse in Florida. The fresnel lens looks beautiful backlit by the descending sun. St. Augustine Light Station was established in 1824 when a 1569 Spanish watchtower was converted into Florida’s first lighthouse. Original lamps were replaced by a 4th order Fresnel in 1855. The lens was removed and hidden during the Civil war by Confederate supporters and relit in 1867. In 1871 a new lighthouse was built. The old light was last lit on Oct 14, 1874 and the new tower first lit on the 15th. A first order Fresnel fueled with lard oil was installed. In 1936 the light was electrified and in 1955 was automated and the last keeper retired. The tower was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1981. The brick tower, painted its hallmark black and white spiral with a bright red lantern room, is meticulously maintained to keep its 1888 appearance. Owned by the St. Augustine Lighthouse Museum, it remains an active aid to navigation. Coordinates: 29° 53’08”N 81° 17’19”W
