In this as in the carpentry and painting courses, thegreatest stress will be laid on plain house work, includ-ing foundations, walls, arches and chimneys. Thecourse of instruction is as follows.—Bricklaying— Proper use of the ordinary bricklayersmortar beds and boards, building scaffolds, screening Bricklaying andPlastering tools ; making sand, slacking lime, use of coloring material, selecting brick, choice of. Class in Plastering lime and sand, spreading mortar, use of cement, cleaning brick; brickpavement, laying foundations with footings, using bond rod, Englishand Flemish ; use of stretcher, headers, halfheaders, rowlocks, and ties;laying piers, setting window and door frames; laying pressed-brickfront, trimming joints with pointing trowel and straightedge; layingoff and building arches, square, banded, gothic, circular and inverted ;building chimneys and stacks, square, round, and octagon; ornamentalwork, terra-cotta and tile work; laying drain pipes, culverts, wells, andcisterns ; cleaning walls with acid ; setting bake oven and bpiler; fire-place work, and arched roof work, barrel and dome. Plastering.—Making mortar and putty, use of hair; lathing 78 CATALOGUE OF plastering walls and ceiling ; plastering to ground and to finish ; sandfinish ; stucco work; and running cornice.
