Two great universities and a womens college of the Pacific Coastare situated in the suburbs of San Francisco. The public schoolsystem of the city is extensive and efficient. In 1884 he moved with his par-ents to San Francisco, where hegrew to manhood, receiving his edu-cation in tlie public schools ofthe city. Adopting the carpenterstrade, he became an expert in thisand other branches of the buildingindustry, also taking much interestin labor organization and was elected district president ofthe Amalgamated Society of Carpen-ters for San Francisco, and was ap-pointed business agent by the Build-ing Trades Council. His entry intopolitical life dates from the fall of 1908, when he was elected a member of the State Assembly fromthe Thirty-second District. In the Legislature he was notably activein the support of measures tending to benefit the working man andin opposition to legislation of a contrary tendency. In November
