This^^ canvas is called the Hanson Washington fromhaving originally been owned by Alexander Contee Hanson,chancellor of Maryland, one of Washingtons secretaries andaides. It is known as the Vaughn type, painted in 1795,from the name of the owner of the first portrait of Washington,showing the right side of the face, that was engraved. Ofthis type nine are known painted by Stuart, three of which,the one exhibited and two others, show some variations fromthe canvas: H. 30*2 inches; W. 25 inches.
