Owing to his conspicuousgallantry in battles at Germantown,Monmouth, Camden, and other places,he was promoted, in 1780, to be lieu-tenant-colonel of the 5th Marylandregiment. In the autumn of that yearhe was transferred to the southernarmy, under Gen. Greene. At thebattle of Cowpens, Jan, 17, 1781, heheaded a charge that secured a victoryfor the patriot forces, receiving, inperson, at this battle, the surrender ofseven British officers. For his serviceshe was subsequently voted a goldmedal by congress. He rendered great aid to Gen. Greene, in the retreat from <V/ f fS!Guilford Court-House, in March, 1781. -^-f^;^^^^^^*^:At the battle of Hobkirks Hill, inApril, 1781, he commanded the 3d Maryland regi-ment, and at Eutaw Springs he was badly woundedwhile leading a charge.
